Baby Hurts is a new narrative led musical which promises to stand out for its raucous wit and emotional depth, featuring original songs - sometimes heartbreaking, sometimes hilarious - and uncompromising performances.

The project is inspired by the Director’s own traumatic experience of becoming a mum for the first time and is further drawn from the real life stories of other mothers, collected during a series of workshops over several years.

"Becky can’t wait to be a mum. A perfect mum. She revels in the giddy anticipation of an idyll, shaped by culture, media, and her friends and family.

When things go wrong, she’s catapulted into a new reality.

After struggling to adapt to this unexpected version of motherhood, Becky eventually finds the strength to cope, accept her life as it is, and embrace the complicated delights of being mummy to a child with additional needs."

Baby Hurts began development in 2019 after husband and wife team Nick (Writer) and Alix (Director) decided it was time to talk about the hidden lives of parents, like them, who are living with the legacy of traumatic birth experiences and the long term challenges of building a life with and for a child with long term care needs.

The project is funded by Arts Council England. Thanks to ACE, our contributing Mums and the generosity of many others who have lent support and advice, we are thrilled to share our work in progress performances with you.
