John was a happy little boy, safe in the arms of a loving family. John now lives in a secure unit, helpless and catatonic. This Children's book for adults tells tales of neglect, abandonment and abuse - the damaging chapters in a familiar story most of us would rather not hear.
This fifteen minute narrated story in verse form, initially presenting in the style of 'Listen With Mother', takes a dark turn as we learn of a young life upended by careless parenting, sexual abuse and violence.
Deceptively simple in approach, Where John Lives gradually leans into abstraction in sound and picture to create an unsettling rendition of sensation and memory. The intention is to help communicate the lingering effects of difficult childhood experiences, rather than simply giving an account of the facts.
The film is initially intended for festival exhibition.
